Does everyone know that the Xena episode The Prodigal is sort of a bastardized retelling of the Jane Fonda movie Cat Ballou?

Because I'm rewatching Xena after seeing Wonder Woman (naturally), and it occurs to me that this obvious fact may not in fact be obvious to everyone.

But it's very much a deliberate reference - much like, say, approximately twenty zillion TV shows (including Buffy) had a "Die Hard"-like episode after Die Hard came out. Or like men jumping from high cliffs into water is meant to emulate Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It's a deliberate homage.

Is anyone else amused that Bianca Lawson is playing a character named Darla?

One detail that keeps striking me - Blue, the little boy, plays with what appears to be some kind of Barbie-like doll, and it's entirely unremarked. That's just his favorite toy, whatever.

I've seen a lot of panic (mostly on Tumblr) about how the show isn't getting very high ratings, and everyone should spread the word and tune in so that we can show Marvel our support.

Leaving aside the fruitlessness of that kind of campaign, the basic problem is, I don't think Agent Carter is a very compelling show. I'm watching, I'm mildly enjoying, but it's not very good. And if it had more time it might - like a lot of shows - hit its stride, but it really isn't there yet.

Mild spoilers for the general arc, nothing more )

The end of The Menagerie kind of reminds me of Angel's Not Fade Away. Do I need to include spoiler space for these?

Angel episode 5x13, "Why We Fight":
Sailor One: I'm telling you, he's some sort of supersoldier, like Steve Rogers, or Captain America

Sailor Two: Steve Rogers is Captain America, you eight-ball.
I never noticed those lines before!

Which I hadn't done in years.

Lorne - love the guy, and in light of the actor's death, he just seems so much more tragic. I miss you, Lorne.

Kate - Am I the only person who really liked Kate? She really wasn't well-developed but she could have gotten there, if they'd given her time. I'm sorry she left the show.

Gwen - I totally forgot about Gwen. I like Gwen.

Early Season 4 - still unwatchable. I'm basically trying to ignore it while it plays in the background so I can get to the Faith episodes.

Lilah - Man, I loved Lilah. I assume that Eve was brought on because the actress who played Lilah didn't want to return? That's a tragedy. Lilah really wasn't much of an actress but she had so much charisma; Eve was fine, but unlike Lilah, I never looked forward to her appearances. Season 5 wasn't bad, but it would have been even better if Lilah had been there instead of Eve.

Posting's been light lately - partly that's because I've got more going on these days at tumblr (user name is giandujakiss), and partly that's because real life is kicking my ass like a big kicking thing.

But I can do the vidding meme! Because vanity!

Day 1: How did you first get into vidding, and what was the first fandom you vidded? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

Consequences, Season 3:

Faith to Buffy: What bugs you is that you know I'm right. You know in your gut, we don't need the law - we are the law.

Selfless, Season 7:

Buffy to Xander: And at some point, someone has to draw the line, and that is always going to be me. You get down on me for cutting myself off, but in the end the slayer is always cut off. There's no mystical guidebook. No all-knowing council. Human rules don't apply. There's only me. I am the law.

Am I the last person to notice this???

New BTVS behind-the-scenes footage, so far it appears to be S2, with a lot of focus on the crew interacting with the actors.

Horse Meat Found In Taco Bell Products
Taco Bell is the latest restaurant chain to acknowledge that its food has been adulterated with horse meat, yanking a variety of ground beef products from its three British outlets and issuing an apology to its patrons Friday.

Meanwhile, in Iceland, a food official said his team had found a beef product from a local producer that contained no meat at all.

Chief meat inspector Kjartan Hreinsson said a brand of beef pie found at a Reykjavik supermarket had “no mammalian DNA.”

As for the Icelandic non-meat pies, Hreinsson said they appeared to have been stuffed with some sort of vegetable matter. He said the municipal authorities are investigating.

in which the Machine flags Buffy's number, and it is only a snippet. There is no more story. I am heartbroken.

I have to say, as mind-numbingly dull as a find the central romance between Olivia and Fitz, I am absolutely fascinated by how this show has managed to make heroes out of villains and vice versa. The protagonists are doing absolutely awful things, and I care what happens to them but I also want to see them all thrown in jail for a very long time.

Buffy vs Edward receives a DMCA takedown notice at YouTube.

Basically, YouTube has made deals with a lot of major copyright holders. When someone else uploads their content - songs, clips, etc - they can choose to "monetize" that upload, which basically means run ads alongside it, rather than insist that it get taken down. This is supposed to make everyone happy - the original fan who uploaded the material doesn't get a takedown notice, and the copyright holder gets to make money.

But that's only supposed to be for uploads that are - or would be, if the copyright holder did not agree to allow them to stay on the site - infringing. If the upload is fair use, then by definition, it doesn't infringe on anyone's copyright, and the copyright holder has no right to monetize it.

So, the creator of Buffy vs. Edward discovered that the owners of Twilight had claimed his video and were running ads alongside it. He rejected the ads, and in response, they issued a takedown notice, which he is disputing.

Because I have very strong and very specific feelings on the subject of breakfast, I woke up at 5:15 this morning so that I could shower and get to the Starbucks - which is like a 10 minute walk from the hotel - by the time it opened at 6:00 am, with my Supernatural travel mug in tow.

I am now back in my room, with coffee and blueberry scone, and plenty of time to decompress before things begin again.

Wow. That was a great (exhausting) day.

on my FList have posted to say that they've started to watch Teen Wolf, or they're just about to start watching.

Wow. That's a lot.

Because I feel it's probably a good start for people transitioning from other fandoms, here is a Teen Wolf story in which Stiles is caught in a virgin trap. Every fandom needs at least one.

(I remember my first virgin trap story fondly. Buffy/Giles, from the heady days of Season One. Nostalgia!)

But as I've said before, a warning: Teen Wolf fic bears very little resemblance to the Teen Wolf show, especially if you're 'shipping Derek/Stiles.
