When all the servants become human again, does that mean that the house is left without any clocks or candelabras or crockery or coat racks? Or are we supposed to believe that during the enchantment, they just have a fuckton of dishes?

I actually suspect that pre- and post-enchantment, the castle contains (for instance) a teapot that bears a remarkable resemblance to Mrs. Potts mid-enchantment. Like, she was fused with the teapot. Does that make sense?

And whichever poor kitchen staff member got stuck with being forks was all the forks, not just one, which explains the excellent synchronization during the forks' Rockettes bit in "Be Our Guest" and also helps explain why the enchantment did not cause a mass panic that we know of—fewer people actually got enchanted and consequently went missing than a superficial look at the movie might suggest.

Maybe not if it's your very favourite teapot?

Here via Network. I hope that's okay. :)

I just watched this movie with my toddler today, and I think that the number of servants in the castle is actually fairly small (in the final scene when Belle and human!Beast are dancing, the number of other people in the room is about twenty or thirty; even accounting for some servants not being in the room, that's not a huge number).

So my take is that the castle is full of enchanted objects but that only a small number of them used to be people. I don't think the plates that come whizzing out of the cabinet used to be people or the forks, for example. I think the enchantment affected the whole castle (changing angels to gargoyles and etc) and allowed Mrs. Potts and etc. to magically control the other objects in the castle. I think that only objects with faces used to be people.

My question after watching the movie is what happened to the Beast's parents and what is his human name.

I love that movie. It's my favorite Disney movie from that era.

And there's been some good Yuletide fic for it too.

I've always looked at it this way: that is a big wealthy house that has been in a family for centuries. Surely people have given the owners gifts, and one of the most common ones is dishes or flatware or teapots. I expect they have several cupboards and closets full of dishes, teapots, cookware and flatware -- and people who were turned into them turned into the pieces they liked best.

(I am not wealthy or in a big house, but I have family silver from three sides of two families... not to mention my mother's china as well as my stoneware and his Corelle and various other things. I can't imagine Beast's place being much different.)
