So, I'm not into the BDSM scene, but I actually once had occasion to research the community in my area, which involved a lot of reading and interviews of participants. And the thing that everyone constantly emphasized was consent, advance negotiation, etc.

Which is why I was so very disappointed when posts about abuse and rape culture in the BDSM community started popping up on feminist blogs. Anyhoo, for those interested in the topic, here's a summary of the issues.
