ETA: Also, between this and Captive Prince and Thor/Avengers, I kind of really want a story now where some usurper steals the throne through totally dishonorable means -- because he/she is a better ruler than the trueblood heir. The true heir of the bloodline would have sucked.

Have you read Diane Duane's Door into Fire books? That's kind of what happens there, although since the story's told from the true heir's POV and the metaphysics of the universe care about the true heir, it ends up getting weird.

Dragon Age (RPG) does that in a somewhat twisted way, twice. One of the "usurpers" is a deliciously Machiavellan woman (guess what, fandom mostly hates her. Sigh.) But it was really well-done how the "~true heirs"~, people you ave sympathies for (one of who is potentially your lover, and in your party) aren't really... the best for the job.
