Argh, yes, and Ta-Nehisi Coates, you're on my list for being part of this. It's not just critics, either. I keep being amazed at how when I talk to my female friends, they saw her role in the movie, and when I talk to my male friends they think that SJ was a terrible actress who couldn't carry the token bimbo role. I keep asking them what movie they hell they think they were watching.
I've been getting weirded out by this in my actual life! I haven't been reading critics' reviews, but I saw the movie in a mostly female group, and afterward we were all like, BLACK WIDOW WAS BADASS. And all the guys I've talked about it since then have said some variation on, "Black Widow was okay I guess, Scarlett is hot." Feminist Hulk smash. >:(
What's killing me is the comment there now by some guy saying that the reason he didn't pay much attention to the Black Widow (or Hawkeye) is that they were filler and didn't do much. To which my response is - thank you for proving the point. So many men, apparently, not only couldn't see Black Widow on the screen, but their eyes actually glaze over when they read a list of the things she did.
Ugh, yes, I keep running into this. My reaction on getting out of the theater was to run on at the mouth about all the awesomeness of Black Widow, so I'm baffled at all the people I've talked to who were more excited about Hawkeye, who I only gave half a rat's ass about because he was important to Natasha, than Black Widow. Arrrrgh.
