(I love how the promoters call it "viral" when they first post it to YouTube. Seriously?)
Anyhoo, based on just these kinds of trailers, fandom has decided that a newer model - David 9 - looks like James McAvoy, and David 8 and 9 now go off and have android adventures together. There's lots of little fic bits and pics on tumblr about it.
:D I cracked up when I realized David 8/David 9 was already a pairing at AO3.
When I posted my story, I wondered how long David 9 had been around; I knew it hadn't been long. But I was surprised to discover the first fic was March 25, 2012, less than a month ago, the first fan art March 20, and the first mention may have been in gokuma's tumblr shortly before that (can't figure out the date of the entry; tumblr interface is crud).
Tumblr provides the seeds of crossovers, and then AO3 provides the place to plant them. AO3 may be the first fanfiction archive that makes it easy to tag and search for a crossover with all relevant fandoms. In the olden days of single fandom fic archives, crossovers were discouraged. I can recall there was one crossover fanfiction comm at LJ, which didn't get much action.
I remember single-fandom archives with crossovers, and they may have been popular stories - particularly if they were posted to a mailing list, or something, first - but yeah, AO3 just opens whole worlds with it :-). And people will see that there's this David 9 tag and then there will be more stories :-).
