I'm rereading the whole enormous Age of Apocolypse Crossover AU right now, which is the big all-x-books crossover of DOOM from the mid-nineties.
And, so, the whole thing is an AU where Charles Xavier died saving Magneto's life back while he and Magneto were still friends and before Xavier founded the school. And without Xavier the world went to hell in a handbasket, of course, and the X-Men were instead founded by Magneto, who keeps a bust of Xavier in the hall outside his office and a picture of the two of them together in his office and well, right there I'm pretty sure I've read that fic.
But then he talks about the "profound effect" Xavier's death had on him and describes him as "a mutant, a visionary, a man of peace, a friend, and a guiding light through these dark times" and does a lot of introspective musing about how Charles died to soon and how different things would be if he were there by Magneto's side.
It's all very, we went to the store for subtext, but they were out, so have this text instead.
