1. I am not going to criticize LJ for being the victim of attacks - esp. since the latest rumors are that the attacks are coming from the Russian government as a way of silencing dissidents. I will, however, loudly criticize LJ for still not fixing the goddamn comment notification problem.

So, Dreamwidth just sent me a new invite code, and I offer it to whoever grabs it first: 8VTX6BBJN3VF4AAAM888

2. Obviously, now is a good time to worry about whether my LJ content is stable. I've been manually reposting my old vid posts here at Dreamwidth, so at least those will be accessible to people when LJ is down, but that won't save the old comments. I'd love to import the posts automatically, but I only want to import older posts (i.e., before I started cross posting), or even just posts with particular tags ("my vids"). As I understand it, however, you can only import all the posts - and that would wreak havoc with my Dreamwidth journal. So, manual it is, then.

3. I am absolutely overwhelmed with work, so of course I'm flooded with vid bunnies - Fringe! Steve/Danny slash! Two different White Collar ideas! And an awesome Nikita bunny that someone passed along! Sigh. Funny how that happens.

4. Yesterday I was at work and I saw a mailing label that said "New York Ofc," and for a moment I wondered why anyone wanted to send a letter to an Original Female Character.

5. Step 1 - eliminate Medicare, reduce taxes on the rich, raise taxes on everyone else. Step 2 - ???. Step 3 - Profit!

I hope it's the Nikita bunny I gave you!

I have that reaction to acronyms/abbreviations all the time.

From the FAQ: "If you do multiple imports of your journal, or if you've previously crossposted entries from your Dreamwidth journal to the journal you're now importing, you won't get duplicate copies of entries. Crossposted and duplicate entries will be detected and won't be imported."

So, importing just the older posts should work.

re: 2, I haven't done this myself, but I've seen people describing the import process for crossposted posts - IIRC, basically the dw importer recognizes that they're crossposted, and then imports just the comments to the dw master post.

I hope there's eventually an importer that does date ranges, or only certain tags, or whatever. When I imported I basically went through post by post deleting some things, but that was only possible because I didn't have many posts!

You could just choose not to import comments at all, but just entries. That's an option in the importer.

And I haven't tried this (I just imported before my first post here), but since the privacy level of the import afaik will go to the more private if you have set such as a default here, you could perhaps temporarily raise your DW default security to "private" do an import, and have a backup of all your non-xposted entries, but they are only visible to you, and eventual duplicates wouldn't be bothersome in public. Then you could go through them at your leisure and change security settings, which might be still easier than manual reposting.

You could make a suggestion at [site community profile] dw_suggestions. I've had stuff I suggested there implemented.

My bosses talk about OTPS a lot, and also RFPs, which I always type as RPF and have to be corrected. *snerk*

Are the notifications still not working for some people? I finally started getting them again a couple of days ago, though it was replaced by bigger site-access problems obviously.

I've heard - not seen, thankfully - that people have been criticizing LJ for being attacked, and I think that's really unfair. LJ's the victim, after all. You wouldn't shout at someone for getting mugged, would you? I know it's frustrating, but we should rather be mad at whoever's behind the DDOS attack.

There's an app called LJ-Sec that lets you import specific posts, I think?

:D I can totally see someone wanting to write a letter to a New York Original Female Character. I have the same kind of reaction when I see "fuck FPS" graffiti in Finland, though they mean a security firm rather than Fictional Person Slash. You can just imagine there being this big turf war between different kinds of slashers.

If you don't mind me asking, and I bet people have asked this before a dozen times, what app do you use for vidding?

I had an older version of Premiere at one point, but I never really got around to using it much. Way back in the day, I learned to edit on Avid and later also used FinalCut Pro, but since I lost access to school computers I haven't really stuck with any app long enough to actually finish a vid. I'm currently trying my hand with Pitivi on Ubuntu, but it's slow work and I've only been poking at it, really, cutting up a film to clips on a timeline with the vague idea I'll do something with it later. I really used to enjoy editing, I don't know why it feels so hard these days. Might be easier if I tried it on something other than a netbook, I guess!
