Immigration officer fired after putting wife on list of terrorists to stop her flying home
An immigration officer tried to rid himself of his wife by adding her name to a list of terrorist suspects.

He used his access to security databases to include his wife on a watch list of people banned from boarding flights into Britain because their presence in the country is 'not conducive to the public good'.

As a result the woman was unable for three years to return from Pakistan after travelling to the county to visit family.

...Cannot even formulate response. WTF. I mean, I have ~3874566345 problems with the whole terrorist watch list thing in the first place (generally, as applied in the US, but I suspect the usage is fairly similar), and I didn't think there were any more ways to make me feel less as though it were a good tool for improving safety. AND YET. Undetected until he applied for a promotion and the background check turned it up? WTF.

Exactly - I mean, the system is infamously horrible in the US - names are incorrect and it's impossible to get off the list once you're on it. I don't know about how it works in the UK but it just shows how terrible the system is generally.

I know! It's like a perfect storm of misogyny and authoritarian-state paranoia and the suggestion of racism.

This is what people often don't get about excessive grants of power to government--the problem is very often not a Great Conspiracy to Create a Dystopia, the problem is that the petty and/or stupid minor officials who implement the measures at street-level will do abusive things for idiotic reasons.

I know. And the stupid and abusive things will fall disproportionately on people who don't have a lot of power, so...
