that nothing ever became of the fact that Dawn is actually an ancient ball of energy with immense power.

Did the comics ever do anything with that?

I will confess that I've bailed on the comics, but last I heard, they had Dawn turning into a giant, then a centaur, and then something else I missed because I skipped those issues. Then she was dating Xander. In the issues I read there was no substantive mention of Dawn's ancient ball of energy nature. It's kind of sad.

It's really sad if she's turning into things and they still haven't mentioned her origins.

In the annals of egregiously dropped plotlines, that has to be near the tippy top.

Well, I'm many issues behind now, so there's a small chance that someone writing the comics has remembered. With any luck someone who's current on the comics will stop by and confirm one way or the other. :-D

No. Her transformations in the comics were related to boy trouble (she got cursed by her ex boyfriend dir cheating, he was a thrice wise demon. Her transformations onto a centaur and a giant were largely played for laughs. The part where she became tiny and doll like was just stupid.

At one point it seemed like the show was maybe going somewhere with eg her mad translation skills, but know it was just bad writing.

I did not know about any of these storylines. And ... they sound not so great to me, I must admit.

Dawn having been a key gets mentioned two or three times in the last couple of arcs but plotwise the point is that she's human now (which makes more thematic sense when you know how it ends). The earlier transformations are more like metaphorical growing pains while she's not sure what she is or how she fits in.

Well, I don't know how it ends but I find that disappointing. Esp. since they said in the canon that the reason the monks made her instead of destroying her was so that her power could be harnessed for good.

To be modestly fair (the comics are dead to me, on account of something that happened recently), it's kind of an amorphous concept, one that the fandom didn't know what to do with, either. I'm sure there must be a few stories that dealt with it besides mine, but they've escaped my memory--certainly it wasn't a large group.

Yeah, it was amorphous, but I just wished there'd been something about her having mystical energy that could be used for some purpose. It's weird that it was just hanging out there. Even if she wasn't used specifically as a "key."

Well, the comics started out somewhat engaging, then somewhere along the way I just fell asleep mid-read and quit them, and now (spoiler spoiler spoiler) so I wouldn't bother.

Wait he what?!

If the comics weren't dead to me before (I bailed at the Buffy/Angel cosmic shenanigans, and ordinarily I'm a Buffy/Angel shipper! [1]), they're really dead to me now.

[1] Mostly I find them entertainingly doomed.

I skimmed it in the comic book shop, so I suppose there's a small chance it was a dream sequence or something and I missed it, but I don't think so.

It wasn't - after you commented I remembered seeing somewhere on Whedonesque about Giles dying, and they asked ASH's reaction. Didn't know it was Angel, though.

Killing Giles is Just Not On. Ever. And doing it in the service of keeping Buffy and Angel apart romantically? BORING.
