That, and "really? another disgusting, troll-like female?"
I love Morgana and Morgause as interesting baddies, but the only good woman in the show is a serving maid who makes food, does laundry, and tends the sick (with one notable exception where she fought). At least she speaks truth to power once in a while.
Yeah, and the problem could have been mitigated somewhat if they just made Morgana less moustache twirly. Which they could have done - they did in earlier seasons. They set it up so you could see where her anger and pain were coming from. But rather than work on that, they just dropped for for pure evilness.
From the very beginning, the show has failed to establish a believable emotional basis for most of the main relationships.
Uther's relationship to magic is pretty well founded. His relationship to Morgana, ditto--I mean, even before we learned that she is the fruit of his Royal and Adulterous Loins, ASH sold his increasingly creepy devotion to her.
But Gaius views Merlin as a son because...he keeps saying so, though we never saw any of that development. Gwen and Arthur are attracted to each other because...why, again? Maybe because she speaks the truth to him? Maybe? It's not clear. Even Gwen and Lancelot's attraction was founded on thin air: "Ooh, pretty!" "Ooh, pretty!" "*hearts and birdies*".
Morgana feels a certain kinship with Morgause because..."I feel I know you." Okay, then. Basis for overthrowing the kingdom and a lifetime of loving and privileged care? Not so much.
And the main relationship in the story, that of Merlin and Arthur, is really only explainable by the slashy-as-hell way they play it: I can believe Merlin puts up with the abusive Arthur because he's in love with him. Otherwise, I can think of no earthly reason why Merlin would embrace this bullshit destiny story and endure the abuse. It's his destiny because The Audience Knows the Myth, not because the writers have actually sold it.
All that said, I do love the show. Thanks for letting me ramble on in your journal. It's nice to be able to be fannish and critical at the same time. Not every fan gets that.
