Apparently, the going rate of exchange is something like this:

To be fair, I do realize that these examples are somewhat skewed; most of these shows have alternative promotional images, and there are counterexamples like:

But then again, when it comes to ads for The Closer, this is actually what I see most often:

Sigh.

But other times, and when I think the show works best, he's essentially the police force's mascot, raising morale and bringing out the best in the professionals while actually doing nothing substantial to further the investigation.

That reminds me of my fave show that turned the genius-wrangler trope on its head - 25 years ago. Remington Steele. Amateur man, professional woman, everyone assumed he was the genius, but basically he interfered and bumbled and at best, he inspired her to find the solution.

I miss my show.

\o/!!!

It was most clear in the first season. After that, Remington's character learned more, and became better at detecting. And the show made that clear - there were explicit references to how he'd learned from her. I was sorry to see some of the original dynamic go, but it was fair - it made sense he'd improve over time.

lovethatshow.

DUDE. IT TOTALLY WAS. I have a whole meta comparing it to Scarecrow & Mrs. King here, but basically, the premise was, Laura Holt was a wonderful detective but sexism prevented her from getting clients, so she invented a fake boss - Remington Steele. An international con man finds out about it, and assumes the Remington mantle. She allows him to play the part because it's good for business, but she's the brains. And in the first season especially, the show went out of its way to have Remington bumble while Laura was the real detective and she was sexy and hot while dressing in relatively mannish clothes (no purse, few skirts). IT WAS AWESOME.
