And ... The Gates comes off the DVR list
Jul. 5th, 2010 09:10 amSorry, even Kyle Secor and Rhona Mitra can't save the show for me...
I was disliking the gender dynamics just sort of generally, but my breaking point came when Kyle Secor's daughter had that conversation with the sheriff's son, and told him that she didn't want to hang out with him anymore because she already had a boyfriend and being with him was too stressful. At which point the sheriff's son said, "All we did was talk, how is that stressful?" And she responded with something along the lines of, "I'm a girl, I can be complicated and have feelings for no reason."
Ugh, ugh, ugh on so many levels, not the least of which was - it wasn't for no reason, dammit. The boy was the one playing stupid here - the reason their conversation was stressful was because they were talking about having romantic feelings for each other, while she already had a boyfriend. Of course that would be stressful! It's not an example of women's irrationality or emotionalism or the mysterious complex inscrutable workings of a teenage girl! And I would have had so much more respect for the show if the chick had said to the boy, "Please don't pretend to be an idiot."
But no.
So goodbye, Gates. ETA: I should add that this is really just a concrete example of the show's running theme, which is apparently "Irrational, emotional, impulsive women and the rational men who govern them."
Here, have a cute clip from an episode of Scarecrow & Mrs. King. Skip ahead to where Lee and Amanda are trapped in the burning warehouse at 3:30:
That scene at 3:30 just makes me smile every single time.
