They should have changed it to read "Securities and XXXChange Commission":
Over the past two years, more than a dozen Securities and Exchange employees and contractors have tried to view pornography on government computers at least 8,273 times. Here's what they were looking at while the global financial system cratered.

The Washington Times broke the story of the SEC's porn problem, which became the subject of numerous inspector general investigations, last month. And Dealbreaker subsequently published one report of an inspector general investigation into an SEC regional supervisor who viewed transvestite porn at work as stress relief.

Now we've obtained reports of 16 investigations into porn-surfing by SEC employees and contractors (one of them is a woman!), including one man who said his daily porn viewing at work was limited to "no longer than an hour and a half a day."
A woman! Heavens to Betsy! And yes, if you click the link, you'll get a full list of the porn sites of choice for the SEC. So you can thoroughly investigate current events.

Am I supposed to be shocked and appalled? Seriously, I don't care as long as they aren't letting themselves be seduced and pimped out by lobbyists.

(Doing their jobs would be a nice bonus, but I won't hold my breath.)

Doing their jobs would be a very nice bonus, considering.

ROTFLOL

If only watching porn at work had been their worst problem. I mean if they had at least worked properly for six hours each day, I would not have minded them watching porn for two hours all that much. At least I'd certainly trade that state of affairs for the general incompetence, apathy, corruption or whatever must have reigned full time with these people.

Yeah, if they were working I wouldn't mind (or, I'd mind for other reasons - despite the examples they give in general a workplace with a lot of porn is one that's hostile to women), but I think there's plenty of evidence they weren't working. I mean, this is side-by-side with the latest examples of how they blew this whole investigation into Allied Capital because they were pals with people who worked there.

I do things I shouldn't on the computer at work every day. (Like RIGHT NOW I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO BE COMMENTING.)

But I am always astonished at the people who surf actual porn on work computers. Particularly government computers. How stupid are they!

My old job, there was apparently someone who was printing out gay porn. (Not slash, so far as I know: just gay porn.) And some folks were going to gambling sites.

WTF. People! Don't be so stupid!

See, yeah - it's not that I expect employees to never surf at work, it's just that (aside from certain gender issues - a porny workplace tends to be hostile to women) when you reach a point where your surfing is porn and not checking the news or Facebook or whatever, you've pretty much gone past distractions and into not doing your job. And it's really true of government jobs, where it's not like you have to finish things by a certain time - at the SEC, you work for a certain number of hours, a lot of the time, and then you're done - so if you're spending a lot of time not working, investigations aren't happening.

I really like both the points you make here--about the correlation between porn in the workplace and hostility to women, and that if you're surfing porn at work you've gone past the point of distracting yourself (which we have all done, and sometimes need to do) and into not doing your job.

The article also seems to suggest the general prevalence of porn-surfing in a way that suggests this had altered the workplace dynamic. I mean, if your supervisor is using a work computer to look at porn, I can see how it would contagious and deleterious to the general work ethic...

Yes, exactly - it sounds as though this wasn't an isolated problem - it was an ongoing thing. Which can't possibly be good for people doing their jobs. Which they, you know, weren't.

And the article says yeah these were professional staff, not, say, the secretaries or administrative staff.

You know, certain conservative voices that I despise have been saying porn was going to bring the world to an end for a while, but I don't think anybody expected this would be the method.

One of them is a woman! Ahahaha. It's funny, you get so immersed in the fanfiction world that when someone reminds you that "good girls don't like porn", you go "...What?"

But, yeah. Porn is fun but there are better things to do at work. Like, you know, work. Especially if you have a hand in the FINANCIAL SYSTEM OF THE WORLD. I know nothing about economics and yet even I know that. Sheesh.

It's just that there have been so very many reports recently about how the SEC is dysfunctional and the investigations it's botched, to have this reasonably widespread porn problem on top is just ... unbelievable.
