Scalzi has exactly the right response to this.

The bookstore owner may be opposed to the law, but if she hosts an event in her store, people travel to see it, they spend money on meals, on lodging - and that goes to other business owners who may not share her views. The state collects taxes on everyone. There is no way to segment out only the "good" people and boycott them. And this boycott is working - in the sense that the state politicians are feeling the pain of it and trying to respond.
