SPN 5x11 - "Sam, Interrupted"

Well, that was quite the fake-out.



As soon as that doctor started analyzing Dean, I was sure she'd turn out to be a monster.

More seriously, Dean's initial conversation with his therapist was possibly the greatest conversation on SPN ever, and certainly the best dialogue they'd ever given to a woman, so immediately I started praying that she'd still be alive at the end of the episode, and - \o/!! Now I need lots of fic where she finds out that Dean and Sam weren't crazy after all and then gives them therapy.

This was actually a very good episode, except for how the title was "Sam, Interrupted" and it still seemed to be (mostly) about Dean. And that ending kinda broke my heart because - I don't think Sam is really "with" Dean at all.

I think this was the first season five ep I liked, like at all.

I want the fic where Sam makes Dean talk about shit by promising him they'll repress starting tomorrow. Just one more heart to heart, Dean and then we'll be stoic, I promise.

I don't know if it's the first one I've liked... I liked The End, and a couple of others. But yeah, it was definitely a cut above, which was nice.

Yeah, that seems to be the general view - but I prefer to think she was real, and that the psychosis only kicked in later.

I prefer to think so too. But her disappearing act after she started talking about things we know damn well Dean never said aloud anywhere near that facility...

No, that part was psychosis. I mean, the first conversation at least.

I know that part was psychosis but we did not see her after that conversation. If she was real (mostly), we should have had at least a glimpse.

(Or maybe we did get a glimpse. Must rewatch. But I don't think we did.)

I actually read her as real too. The psychosis seemed to grow only later, and I loved her to pieces as well. I kinda hoped she'd find out in the ep :(

Yes, that's what I thought too after it was revealed that the first touch by the wraith-nurse started things. So I then assumed the psychiatrist was a hallucination from the start. It would have been cool had she been real though.

Eh, I thought it was sort of equally about both brothers. BUT: perhaps I am just projecting, because I am just so thankful to be getting anything of substance about Sam at all.

I also really liked how the shot of Sam from above (in the white room towards the end) seemed to be a deliberate echo of the shot in "When the Levee Breaks". Among other things, it helped to heighten that sensation of not knowing who or what was actually real.

I ALSO LOVED THAT THERAPIST SO MUCH. So much.

I went to try and find the name of the actress, because she looked a little familiar, and I noticed the this ep was written by Dabb and Loflin. Which makes total sense, because they've written a few other great psychologically-interesting eps starting in S4, such as "After School Special", "Jump the Shark" and "I Believe the Children Are Our Future"

Yeah, I definitely thought we got a little into Sam's head to some extent but still it felt like an excess of Dean. And I'm a total Dean!girl and Dean's my woobie, but the story structure suffers when everything's about him.

The actress reminded me - and a lot of people - of the one who played New!Meg, but it wasn't the same person. I loved her too.

You're right about the shot in the white room - I'd forgotten! I haven't had a chance to rewatch yet and catch everything I missed the first time around.

Ehm, wasn't she always a figment of Dean's mind? After all, the monster-nurse made them crazy as soon as they entered the institution.

There seems to be disagreement about that. I personally choose to believe their first conversation was real and the poison took a while before it had an effect; others differ.

Aww... sammy. He just breaks my heart... well, they both do. Yeah, that was kind of a bait-n-switch there. I was curious as to why it wasn't more about Sam. But yes, I loved her. That just made my eyes go all cartoony.
