I find I'm enjoying it a lot more, principally because I really like Cara. In the first season, there really wasn't anyone I cared much about, but Cara sparks things up, both because she's interesting in and of herself, and because she creates a needed tension in the group. And I'm particularly amused at how she signals her independence from the Mord'Sith by wearing her leather dominatrix outfit in a manner that reveals her cleavage. That'll show 'em.

Mostly, though, I can't get over the fantastically inconsistent characterization, horrendous dialogue, and facially nonsensical plots (It'll take me years to teach you the spell! Or five minutes. Whatever.), all embedded within a BDSM milieu so explicit that it actually makes me blush.

Oh?

I watched the Pilot (somewhat by accident) and was tickled pink! by a powerful lead female who's also a sorceress and seems to have agency, but I wasn't sufficiently enamoured of the lack of humour and the seen-a-thousand-times plot, plus I saw our sorceress step back behind the Young Boy Saviour of the World even then.

But. More than one woman who does something? And there is magic and swords and kink? Hmm...

He's the chosen one and the nominal leader and all, but the women are very powerful and get plenty to do and know more than he does, so it works for me.

There is no humor.

The woman I like, Cara, is introduced in the last episode of the first season. Nothing really interested me much until she showed up, but she happens to be exactly the kind of character I enjoy.

The kink is overwhelming. I in no way recommend the plots, the dialogue, or the characterizations (other than Cara).

That does sound good!

Think I'll check out that ep first - can always go back. :)

Fascinating! Thanks for the elaborations.

She doesn't really get all that interesting until the second season premiere - I didn't realize when she was first introduced that she was being set up to become a regular. I actually recommend that if you're going to skip, just skip to the beginning of season 2- they start a whole new storyline then, and it just makes more sense as an entry point.

Yeah, it's safe to assume I will still be able to intellectually follow the story. ;)

Actually, I can't keep a lot of the mythology straight but that's because it comes out of nowhere and is dropped and is not well explained and it's not like I'm giving the series my full attention at all times :-). But you can get the gist.

Of course, by skipping, you'll miss the episode in the first season that was so jaw-droppingly BDSM that it left me stunned they let this on network TV. That episode is Denna, by the way, if you're curious.

Oh man that show needed Cara so much. I generally enjoy it as something to watch when I'm bored, and I love Kahlan for being a strong female character with agency and fantastic hair, but she's often boringly written, she and Richard are boring, Zedicus is boring, there's little humour or crack in the script which is basically what I think these Hercules/Xena/Merlin-like series NEED to even be watchable (well that and extreme slash subtext). Takes itself a little too seriously.

But I love basically everything about Cara. I hate woobified male characters, but female woobies get me every single time because they're so freaking rare. She brings some tension to the group, she's well-characterized, she's funny without trying to be, she's hot, and she made me not miss Denna in the slightest which I didn't think would happen.

Also, oh my god the kink, yes. It's incredibly explicit. But mostly I was amused by it (LOL @ the entire concept of the agiel); I probably would've found that one s1 episode kind of hot if Richard weren't so generally hard to take seriously.

I'm a bit embarrassed that my eye skipped ahead to the second paragraph and I got as far as "BDSM" before realizing you weren't talking about Merlin...

Yeah, I like the idea of Kahlan but until Cara no one was interesting. And she makes Kahlan and Richard interesting because they clash with her. (Nothing can make Zed interesting). Although I confess I like woobified characters of any gender - so Cara was such an easy sell for me.

Heh. It's the same vein - gleefully ahistorical, sword and sorcery that isn't even trying to go for believability, lovely scenery and costumes, etc. So I can see how you'd make the mistake :-).
